Published in conjunction with Christopher Wool's 2004 Luhring Augustine, New York exhibition, this oversized catalogue reproduces his new limited-palate spray enamel paintings and small works on paper. Wool's work conflates the processes of printmaking and painting by employing a combination of techniques, including spray paint, silkscreen, and poured and rolled paint. In this new work he primarily uses silkscreen, limiting both his process and his palette, and returns to conventional painting by exploring the ideas of painting and erasing, gesture and removal, depth and flatness. By restricting the palette, Wool sets up a strict constraint on the range of the paint and further pushes the boundaries of what makes a painting formally successful. Despite the clear references to industrialism and graffiti in the methodology, these paintings assert an elegance and poetry of form.
